Swarming MLB: UNU’s Picks for 5-23

Over past two weeks, teams around Major League Baseball have gotten pretty streaky. The Rangers and Braves have each ridden hot streaks to get back into contention within their divisions, while the Phillies, Marlins, and Padres are all mired in losing streak death spirals right now.

How does our Swarm AI technology process information like that? Whether it involves winning or losing, a streak can be seen as a trend line for a team, a very basic and honest assessment of performance covering a week or two within a long season. An UNU Swarm participant needs to assess the trend and if it is truly indicative of expected performance and can be relied upon for a prediction. There’s a potential corollary to that: a streak that is perceived as unsustainable, where either a regression (or progression) to the mean is due to happen. With so many teams on streaks of late, here’s how today’s UNU baseball swarm predicted tonight’s games around the league.

It’s entirely likely you’re looking at the top of that chart and trying to square the swarm’s confidence in the Diamondbacks this evening, hosting the White Sox. Unanimous A. I. can never be 100% sure why a swarm reacts the way it does, but we can look at the end result and see if there are factors that may influence a prediction in play.

The replay above shows there’s a lot of confidence in this pick. Where is that confidence coming from? A couple of guesses. We talked about streaks, and Arizona is 7-3 across its last 10 games so that could be part of it. Patrick Corbin, the starting pitcher for the Snakes tonight, is steady if unspectacular. His opponent, Dylan Covey, is struggling mightily so far in his rookie year. So maybe it’s one of those. Or, it could be the gaudy 19-8 record the D-backs have posted in home games in the desert so far this season. Whether any or all of those factors played into the UNU Swarm’s thinking, the group did make this one of our highest-confidence predictions for the night.

Every week during the MLB season, Unanimous A.I. will be conducting swarms to pick the outcomes of games. If you’d like to either join a swarm or just get the predictions weekly, feel free to drop us a line below.
