Swarm Intelligence Ponders Apocalypse in Historic AMA

Legends like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Buzz Aldrin, and even President Obama have nearly broken the internet by answering questions on Reddit’s popular Ask Me Anything Q&A. Now you can add UNU to that list.

Last week, UNU hosted the first ever AMA with an Artificial Hive Mind. More than 5000 up-votes and 10,000 comments later, UNU’s AMA has become one of the most popular in Reddit history, right next to luminaries like Steve Wozniak and Bill Murray. But, while the topic of the AMA was the US Presidential election, many of the questions asked of the Hive Mind dealt with something even more important: the destruction of the world.

According to the Redditors’ questions, an apocalypse could take many forms, from nuclear war, to economic collapse and climate devastation. Given UNU’s uncanny track-record for predictions, asking the Hive Mind about the likelihood of these catastrophes proved irresistible to AMA participants. But perhaps more importantly, seeing Reddit ask UNU to ponder these horrific events gives some real insight into the current public sentiment.

First, Reddit askedwill Global Warming destroy humanity in the next 10 years?

Global Warming 10 NO
So far, so good! Not only did the Swarm not believe that Global Warming would destroy humanity before George R. R. Martin delivers The Winds of Winter, consensus was achieved in less than 15 seconds. So, what else can we look forward to avoiding in the next decade? Reddit wanted to know if India and Pakistan would go nuclear in their conflicts:

India and Pakistan NO

Another conforming answer!  But what about Russia?  Many people on Reddit wanted to know if Vladimir Putin was planning a surprise nuclear attack on the USA?  The question was put to UNU, and…

Putin Attack NO

Of course, there are many types of disasters that keep Redditors up at night. And with the sting of the financial collapse in 2008 still fresh in many peoples’ minds, Reddit asked UNU about the possibility of another bubble bursting.

Given the optimistic predictions, it’s tempting to think of the swarm as naive or in denial. But, when UNU was asked to push the timelines out from one decade to five, the outlook for humanity became much less clear:

WW3 in 50 NO

Unlike UNU’s predictions around the Kentucky Derby or the Stanley Cup, I won’t be putting any money down on what the Swarm had to say about the apocalypse. ( I saw The Big Short twice and I’m still not sure how to profit from a “total financial collapse” anyway ).

But what is striking about these results – in an era of fear-mongering and mistrust – the Swarm held fast to a belief in the decency and rationality of mankind. Maybe that’s the true value of thinking together?**

One last thought. Given the temperament displayed by the Swarm, and recent researched published by Unanimous AI founder, Dr. Louis Rosenberg on the Morality of  the Hive Mind, it’s worth wondering what a government run by a Swarm Intelligence might look like. This topic came up in UNU over the weekend, during a discussion of various forms of government, and the replay is too interesting not to share.

If you’d like to join the Swarm,  and, you know, do your part in possibly running the world,  just drop on in to UNU.

** For more on this notion, Sebastian Junger’s recently released TRIBE is an excellent read.
