Swarming the NBA: AI Picks for Week 1

The NBA regular season began this week, with both excitement and uncertainty swirling around the various clubs in the Association. If the Celtics are healthy, are they the team to beat in the East? Or will Kawhi Leonard be able to take Toronto to the Finals? Will Philadelphia and Trusting the Process have a say? In the West, it’s essentially “Who can beat the Warriors?” Will Houston be able to finish what they couldn’t do last year? Or will some dark horse like Utah have a shot? And hey, the Lakers have this new guy named Lebron that seems to be pretty good at the basketball thing. Our first NBA swarm of the season tipped off this afternoon, with this set of picks for the schedule.

If NBA fans were to diagram the trajectories of various NBA clubs, It’s unlikely that there would be two more divergent paths than the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors. These teams meet tonight in Toronto, where the Raptors—fortified with a busy offseason—look like one of the teams to beat in the East. For the Cavs, this season marks the beginning of a new post-Lebron era, and it may take a while until they’re competitive. The swarm likes Toronto’s chances tonight.

This is a swarm prediction with an incredibly confident, high conviction pick. What’s interesting about this is that the swarm seems to pause a beat before taking the puck to the Toronto forecast, as if reconciling for a moment that Lebron is no longer bringing his talents to the shores of Lake Erie. The swarm picked this game as their pick of the week as a straight up proposition.
