Swarming the NBA: AI Picks for Week 17

The NBA trade deadline arrives tomorrow at 3:00 eastern time, effectively sealing rosters for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. It also represents a final reckoning for teams in both conferences. With last night’s knee injury to Kristaps Porzingis, for instance, the Knicks are likely to look at fully tanking things the rest of the year. Meanwhile in the west, winning streaks by the Jazz and Lakers may have those front offices recalibrating their thinking. Today’s NBA Swarm considered tonight’s final six pre-deadline games, as well as 6 games to be played tomorrow night as well.

It’s no surprise that the swarm picked Golden State beating last-place Dallas at home for its pick of the week. The swarm picked the Warriors narrowly over the Raptors, who host the Knicks in Toronto tomorrow. Maybe the most interesting high-confidence pick the swarm made this week, however, was taking Detroit at home over Brooklyn. Two weeks ago, that game might’ve been a much closer prediction, but no more.

The Pistons had been underachieving for over a month when they pulled the trigger last week on a trade to bring talented but oft-injured forward Blake Griffin to the Motor City. Since his arrival, the Detroit has won four straight and appear to have turned the corner on their frustrating season. The NBA Swarm is certainly a believer. The replay above shows such rapid consensus and unanimity that only the Golden State prediction can rival it on those metrics. The somewhat muted $77 wagering confidence may simply reflect that the swarm of NBA fans are still not quite sold on a paradigm where the Pistons are a consistently good squad.
