Swarming the NFL: AI Picks for Week 2

The first week of the NFL season is in the books, and it brought plenty of surprises. The Chiefs and Raiders both looked like legitimate playoff contenders. The Patriots and Seahawks both looked a little wobbly. And we’re not sure what to make of the Los Angeles Rams after their decisive win on Sunday. The start of any sports season brings tough-to-predict, volatile results, and Week One in the NFL was no exception.

The NFL Swarm managed to call 10 of 15 straight-up wins correctly last week. Only one of ESPN’s featured experts beat the swarm, and only by a single game. If you played the swarm’s straight up picks against the moneyline, you would have turned a nice $50 profit for your trouble. Not bad for a week that featured some unexpected results.

You can see from the chart that the swarm seems to be of two minds regarding the surprising outcome of the NFL’s opening game last Thursday. There’s some great faith that the Patriots and their coaching mastermind Bill Belichick will adjust off their humiliating loss at home to the Chiefs and take care of business against New Orleans.

The other opinion the swarm has based on that season-opener is that Kansas City is a very good football team. No matter that the Philadelphia Eagles looked at least solid in their Week One win. The NFL Swarm has a lot of confidence in the Chiefs to win their home opener on Sunday.

Many people who bet on football games like to bet the point spreads. Playing games against the spread has the reward of paying out more when you pick a game correctly, against the risk of being much more difficult to correctly predict. This early in the season, there is reason to be wary of betting Against the Spread: last week’s record was 7-8 ATS, suggesting a true coin-flip scenario. That would have been much less profitable than playing straight up wins. Still, if it’s your thing, here’s our against the spread chart.
