Swarming the NHL: AI Picks for Week 8

Two months into the NHL season, and the standings are finally beginning to sort themselves out with new realities for the 2018 season taking hold. Doormats from last season such as Buffalo and the Rangers are showing that they’ll be contenders, while expected playoff teams like the Blues and Blackhawks may already be out of the postseason hunt and setting up January fire sales. The swarm, coming off a 7-2 performance last week, had this set of predictions for tonight’s action.

Although almost every NHL team has exhibited maddeningly inconsistent play at times this season, two of the teams in action tonight have displayed incredible resiliency and as such are tied for the best record in the league. In the west, Nashville faces a tough game with Colorado that the swarm had only light confidence in. But in the east, the high-scoring Tampa Bay Lightning host Anaheim tonight, and the swarm loves the home team’s chances.

What stands out about this replay the most is the number of magnets that are pulling the puck to a higher confidence, two-goals-plus Tampa win prediction. This swarm in general showed a great deal of dissension here and there that put the majority of the game predictions into the middle tier of confidence. On this particular match-up however, there’s an exhibition of unity and cohesion in the magnets that clearly sets this game apart from all others on the schedule, making this the easy choice for a pick of the night.
