Baseball’s long season can be a grind for players, and it’s in the late July/early August heat that the depth of teams is typically tested the most. Players are lost to injury, and teams have to compensate by making trades or tapping into their own farm systems. In the past few weeks alone, the Dodgers have lost Clayton Kershaw, the Nationals have had to shelve Steven Strasburg, and the Astros are figuring things out without Carlos Correa, one of the most dynamic young superstars in the game.

That’s a key consideration the MLB Swarm AI has to consider each week. Who’s on the disabled list? Who’s nursing a sore arm day-to-day? Who’s coming back to a lineup? All of these factors influence the outcome of games.

Last week, the swarm returned to earth a bit after spending two weeks in the stratosphere, predicting winners as if doing that for Major League Baseball was easy. When pitcher Jaime Garcia belts a grand slam to help beat you, the swarm can only take that as a sign from the baseball gods that the predictions were getting a little too accurate.

Although a few of the division races have become runaways, in the month of July we’ve also seen some tightening of these playoff chases around the league. One division where that’s certainly happened is the American League East. The Yankees streaked out to an early lead in the division, fell back, and are now closing back in on the Red Sox. Boston clings to a narrow two-game lead as they swing through a difficult West Coast trip. The Bombers, on the other hand, host Cincinnati at home for a series that at least on paper – and in the eyes of the swarm – looks much less threatening.
