HISTORIC VENUE TAPS UNANIMOUS AI TO HANDICAP DERBY USING SWARM AI TECHNOLOGY
This Saturday marks the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby but the first time that historic Churchill Downs has ever turned to an Artificial Intelligence for help in handicapping the race. A unique collaboration with Churchill Downs and the handicapping experts from TwinSpires, the official betting partner of the Kentucky Derby, has allowed Unanimous A.I. to form a “super-expert” made up of some of the best racing minds in the world using our Swarm A.I. platform, UNU.
.
You can read about this exciting partnership across the internet in places like
Forbes,
TechRepublic, and
Thoroughbred News. That last article was written by Bill Finley, an expert handicapper and award-winning journalist who’s been covering horse racing for 30 years. Bill was one of the insiders who brought his knowledge and wisdom into the Derby swarm. Other participants included handicapping national champion Mike Beychok, Kentucky legend Dick Downey, and Ed DeRosa, TwinSpires in-house guru, who will be using the Swarm A.I. recommendations to form a comprehensive strategy for the Derby that will be made
available on TwinSpires so you can bet alongside our AI.
.
As always, our Swarm AI did more than just provide a winner, it also reveals its relative confidence in various outcomes. For example, while the swarm eventually chose Classic Empire as the horse most likely to win ( replay included below ), it’s more accurate to say that the “super-expert” felt the field was extremely competitive at the top. According to the swarm, four horses – Classic Empire, McCracken, Irish War Cry, and Always Dreaming – are a cut above the rest, but their predicted order of finish is more difficult to assess. This chart reveals the swarm’s confidence for reach of its top 11 horses.
.
.
To arrive at these predictions, researchers at Unanimous used the same methodology that produced last year’s winning Superfecta bet and expanded it to include Top 4 confidence and longshot predictions. This process quickly narrowed down the large Derby field using a series of “least likely to win” questions like this. For clarity, the number next to each horse’s name refers to its position in the starting gate. This is crucial piece of information that sparked lots of debate among the experts during the swarm.
.
.
As you can see, the process of narrowing the field involved some epic showdowns. Some questions,
like this one trying to determine the top three horses in the field, had to be asked repeatedly before the super-expert would render its verdict. Ultimately, just two horses remained, McCracken and Classic Empire.

BREAKING DOWN THE DATA
We’ve completed our analysis of the data collected from participants and the output generated by the Swarm A.I. system. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from working with the pros at Churchill Downs / TwinSpires over the past few weeks, it’s that this is a wide-open Derby, and that’s why it’s called “the two most exciting minutes in sports.” This is the data we provided to Ed DeRosa. Please keep in mind that we are an A.I. company providing insights.
.
Based on our analysis of the expert swarm’s output, there was a strong consensus that four horses have by far the highest chances of finishing in the top four, with two followers that have consequential chances of entering the top four.
