Swarming EPL: AI Goes 9-1 in Week 1 Test Run

There are a number of reasons why Unanimous AI runs frequent swarms to predict and forecast the outcomes of sporting events. First of all, it’s obviously fun for our participants (and our researchers) to see how well the swarm can perform week over week. Unanimous has proven already that swarming can amplify the intelligence of individuals, and the parameters of sports contests—with definite beginnings and absolute conclusions—provide a ready-made way to evolve and refine Swarm Intelligence. As such, even as sports seasons proceed the research team at Unanimous is constantly iterating and working to improve the modalities and methodologies to improve the results derived.

Particularly at the start of the Premier League season (this is the third year that Unanimous will be predicting EPL matches), there’s both a need and opportunity to test new or different methodologies. We know that the start of ANY major sports season is going to produce wildly volatile results. With the Premiership, thanks to relegation and promotion, that volatility is greatly heightened. With the season starting this past weekend, researchers were interested in using the first match-day to test some new ideas in how the swarm makes predictions.

Results of this internal test — using a group of Premier League fans — as seen in our table below, were extremely promising.

What’s especially strong about this test run (beyond the stellar 9-1 record the swarm managed) are the conditions under which it was done. As stated, the start of an EPL season is already highly volatile in nature. Added to that for 2018, though, is World Cup player participation. Some of the top clubs in the league had players return with just enough time to participate in a week or less of practices before this weekend’s season kickoff.

A striking piece in this group’s results is the fact that they correctly predicted one of the two match draws that occurred in the first week – Everton against newly promoted Wolverhampton. The swarm also called a pure upset correctly in taking Crystal Palace visiting across London to play against another team back up to the Premier League in Fulham.

There were obviously other points of key data to pull from the first week of Premier League play that future swarms can incorporate. Liverpool – after a summer of spending – appears to be set to challenge for the top spot in the League. And last year’s champions, Manchester City, seem to have lost nothing based on their away dismantling of Arsenal. We’ll continue to run Premier League swarms, starting next week. Every week, researchers at Unanimous AI gather a Swarm of EPL fans to predict all of the weekend’s action. Want to join the Swarm, or just have the picks delivered to your inbox? Click the button below…
