Swarming the EPL: AI Picks for Week 4

After three weeks the top of the English Premier League Table has its share of surprises. Watford sits at a perfect 3-0, and clubs such as Bournemouth and Leicester are ecstatic to be in the upper half. There are also surprises about who isn’t in the top. United and Arsenal have both scuffled out of the gate. Even a championship contender like Manchester City has stubbed its toe in the early-going.

The weekly Premier League swarm has to manage these dynamic variables in performance each week when they predict games. Yet even with as many changing circumstances as are present in the early going of a new sports season, the EPL Swarm has so far managed things remarkably well. After going 6-4 in week two, last week the Premier League Swarm posted a 7-3 record. Heading into week four, they look to stay hot with these forecasts.

Manchester City’s controversial draw at Wolverhampton last week was the Swarm’s – and really everyone’s – biggest shocker of the season to date. The Citizens return home this week, where they host a scrappy Newcastle club who have begun the season with an extremely difficult schedule. It’s reasonable to conclude that City will want to take out their frustrations from last week on their next opponent, and the Tyneside Magpies look to be that sacrificial lamb.

In a swarm, the concept of wagering “virtual dollars” is used to help the participants express confidence in their predictions along a spectrum. Taking that to the next level, the replay above shows a swarm that might be willing to bet virtual lungs on the outcome of this match, so strong is the confidence for the Sky Blues.  This is the swarm’s pick of the week, with as close to unanimous consensus as we typically see, and a full measure of those virtual dollars providing additional conviction.

Every week, researchers at Unanimous AI gather a Swarm of EPL fans to predict all of the weekend’s action. Want to join the Swarm, or just have the picks delivered to your inbox? Click the button below…
