Although a week remains until the MLB trade deadline next Tuesday, deals are already beginning to shake up the league. The Dodgers paid a four-prospect price to rent Manny Machado’s services for the rest of the season, and the Athletics and Cubs have begun shoring up their respective bullpens in smaller deals. It can be a nerve-wracking time for players in clubhouses around the sport, and the influx of new players can create as much distraction for teams in buying mode as the sudden absence of traded teammates can affect the sellers. The weekly Baseball Swarm sorted through all of that to come up with this set of picks for tonight’s games.
The swarm’s pick of the night isn’t particularly surprising, taking Boston over Baltimore, who have 42.5 games separating them in the standings. Sometimes, in fact, the swarm is picking against a team when it assigns high confidence to a forecast as much as it’s predicting for another team. That seems to be the case with their confidence in picking the Angels to handle the Chicago White Sox tonight.
The Angels have been hovering around the .500 mark for most of the season, and losing starting pitcher Garrett Richards hardly helped their cause. But the White Sox are nearly 20 games below .500 despite playing in the Central division of the American League. In the replay above, most of the magnets start on the Angels’ side of the hex, and eventually form a consensus around the high confidence two-runs-plus forecast. If that replay still looks a bit tentative, the swarm seemed to find more conviction in the pick by assigning that $80 virtual betting confidence shown in the chart.
