Swarming MLB: AI Picks for September 28th

The final swarm of the Major League Baseball regular season presents an interesting, difficult challenge for the weekly baseball swarm. The group will have to figure out how they want to forecast (and how confident in those predictions they want to be) a group of games which may be played by teams with mixed motives. Clubs in the playoffs are likely to try to balance out playing time to keep their players sharp, without wearing them down.  And teams with no playoff considerations are likely to try to either get an early look at some of next year’s prospects, or perhaps a final look at a soon-to-be departed longtime regular.

The swarm only found two games to be strongly confident in for tonight. No surprise, though, that they took playoff-bound Houston and Cleveland to win their games over last-place ballclubs. These picks almost end up being a matchup of perceived organizational strength across entire active rosters. And given those considerations, the swarm made the defending World Series champs the pick of the night.

Even if Houston’s playoff ticket has been punched for a while, they’ve still managed to rotate in enough regulars to keep their players sharp and focused. The swarm may have clued in on that – or Baltimore’s desire to check out of a disastrous year – when making this pick. The magnets are almost unanimous here, and they make a formation that pulls without hesitation to the high confidence, two-runs-plus pick on this contest.
