UNU Picks for Major League Baseball, April 14, 2017

The great appeal of baseball to its fans is the sheer unpredictability of the sport. It remains a game in which probabilities are lined up against one another – a hitter’s batting average against a pitcher’s ERA, for instance – and sometimes the likely result happens…and sometimes not. That’s one reason why Major League Baseball seasons run 162 games. As that marathon trek across the summer goes on, the best teams should eventually begin to reveal themselves.

That’s the challenge faced by UNU baseball swarm participants weekly. Unanimous A. I. asks them to look at games and use the limited data in a season that isn’t yet 10 games old to predict winners and losers. Still, the swarm of baseball fans can think together and predict winners of even the toughest games, with UNU helping to amplify their individual intelligence.

One of the most intriguing matchups on this schedule involves Zack Greinke taking on his former Dodger teammates and Clayton Kershaw in Los Angeles. This game doesn’t just pit two former rotation mates and Cy Young winners against one another. Beyond that personal matchup, there’s the competition between a Diamondbacks club trying to prove their hot start is no fluke, and a Dodgers team who are expected to compete for a National League pennant. Although this may look like a close game on paper, the swarm is pretty confident they have this result pegged.

Elsewhere on the schedule, UNU predicts a hot Nationals team to keep rolling behind Stephen Strasburg, and likes the chances of Johnny Cueto becoming baseball’s first pitcher to win three games in the early season.
