Will a Terrible Trailer Slime the new Ghostbusters?

The trailer for the Ghostbusters reboot made internet history for all the wrong reasons. When the now-infamous trailer was first posted in March of this year, the Washington Post wrote that people hated the first look at the film “with the power of a thousand proton packs.” The Post also noted that its nearly 200,000 “dislikes” dwarfed the 1,300 dislikes for the much-hated GODS OF EGYPT trailer. And since then, the Ghostbusters trailer has racked up nearly 900,000 dislikes! That makes the trailer the most disliked video in YouTube history.

Ghostbusters is, of course, one of the most beloved 80s comedies, and despite the trailer, interest in the film remains incredibly high. ( After all, if people weren’t talking about it, the trailer wouldn’t have gotten all those views in the first place. ) So, it was only natural that people would want to ask UNU’s Swarm Intelligence about the future of their favorite parapsychologists.

Researchers at Unanimous AI took those questions to a swarm of randomly selected movie fans who worked together inside the UNU swarming platform to answer the Ghostbusters questions as a unified intelligence. The first question posed to the Swarm was relatively straightforward: how will the new Ghostbusters be received? Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, UNU’s response was similarly blunt:

The movie fans not only predicted that people would “hate” the new movie, they achieved consensus in just 14 seconds, indicating a high degree of conviction in its answer. And, as you can see in the replay, the support for the “people will hate it” option was dominant over the course of the decision.

With that sentiment in mind, the movie’s massive budget seems like a bet on Enron. So, Unanimous AI researchers had to ask the Swarm the $154 million question: how will the Ghostbusters movie do at the box office?

Ghostbusters Bust

Ouch. It doesn’t look for the reboot. And, as you can see below, the “total bust” option had the lion’s share of the total pull almost immediately. This is bad news if you’re a studio executive. But then again, if you’re a studio executive, you’ll probably be just fine no matter what happens to Ghostbusters.

And, hey, maybe it’s true that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. And maybe all of the hate for the Ghostbusters trailer will still turn into a big opening weekend. After all, even GODS OF EGYPT made its money back, and no one on Earth was asking for a CGI retelling of Egyptian mythology starring two guys from Denmark and Scotland. In comparison, millions of people have been waiting for decades to see the Ghostbusters back in action. For their sake, here’s hoping the Swarm is wrong on this one.

On this topic, the Independence Day reboot opens this weekend. As Box Office Mojo notes, a “forecast for RESURGENCE is a tough one to make as an argument could be made for an opening anywhere from $45-90 million.” But that didn’t stop Unanimous AI researchers from asking the Swarm to make a prediction about Resurgence’s opening weekend at the box office.

Resurgence

Check back here as the Ghostbusters premiere approaches, because we’ll be sure to publish UNU’s prediction for that film as well on the blog. In the meantime, if you want to talk about Ghostbusters, Independence Day or anything else Pop Culture, come on our to UNU.ai and ask UNU anything!
