AI Picks for the NFL: Week 5

Week 4 of the NFL featured a return to form for the NFL Swarm. After a tumultuous – and seemingly unpredictable – Week 3 where up was down and 17-point underdogs won by 19, the weekly gathering of football fans and enthusiasts turned in a rock-solid performance both Against the Spread and Straight up. The Swarm AI system labeled five games as “Best Bets” ATS and ( with a tie ) hit 70% of those predictions. In contrast, the games that were labeled as “High Risk or Inconclusive” proved to be just that, showing that the Swarm AI system is demonstrating a high-degree of self-awareness.

The Swarm was even more impressive forecasting winners, posting a 10-4 record overall ( 71% ) and accurately picking all but one of its Best Bets. With that in mind, it’s perhaps not surprising that the Swarm labeled three games as Best Bets straight up, and another two Against the Spread. You’ll notice the Ravens and the Rams are represented on both charts. More on that below.

Savvy NFL fans have noticed that passing records seem poised to fall across the league. A confluence of rule changes and ever-taller WRs seems to have granted superpowers to the passing game. This puts teams like the LA Rams, with a rising star in Jared Goff slinging the rock to targets like Brandin Cook and Robert Woods, in a perfect position to thrive. That might explain why the Rams are the Swarm AI’s Best Bet both to beat the Seahawks and cover the 7.5 point spread, and why Philip Rivers and the Chargers look so good this week against the Raiders.

The only other team deemed worthy of a double Best Bet is the Baltimore Ravens. In contrast, a full half of this weekend’s slate was deemed by the Swarm AI to be unworthy of a wager. Those seven games labeled “High Risk” or inconclusive each come with a red flag ( or ten ) that suggest that the best bet in these contests might be no bet at all.

As is sometimes the case, all that confidence in the Ravens might have something to do with the fact that they play the Cleveland Browns this weekend.  Still, the presence of highly-touted rookie Lamar Jackson seems to have lit a fire under the undoubtedly elite Joe Flacco, and the purple jerseys are swarming to the ball on defense. If that form holds against the Browns, not even potential savior Baker Mayfield may be enough for the Browns to pull off the slight upset at home.
