Swarming the NHL: AI Picks for the Week 1

The NHL season has begun, and that means that Unanimous AI has recruited a swarm of NHL fans to convene weekly to forecast the outcome of games. Last year’s fan swarm was enormously successful, with their results managing the elusive achievement of beating the Vegas odds across the season, a feat outlined in an academic study whose findings were released this summer.

Although there’s obvious excitement from an engaged crew of pucks fans, it should also arrive with some water as cold as rink ice. Early season NHL games are about as unpredictably volatile as they come, and October hockey in general can be a fool’s errand to draw any long-term conclusions from. With those caveats in mind, however, let’s see how the swarm predicted six games played on Tuesday, and pair played on Wednesday.

After winning the President’s Trophy last season, the Nashville Predators were unceremoniously escorted from the playoff premises in an epic seven-game semifinal series with division-rival Winnipeg. Even with that crushing defeat back in May, the Preds are expected to once again contend for the Cup this season, and tonight they face off against a Calgary team which has begun the season by giving out goals like candy.

The combination of what the swarm might see as a mis-match in talent combined with the Predators skating on home ice makes this an incredibly confident pick for the group, even by early-season standards. The magnets in the replay above form a powerful formation and pull the puck to the only two-goal win prediction the swarm made in this first week. The swarm also picked this game as their choice for pick of the night as well.
