The beginning of a sports season is supposed to be filled with a great deal of uncertainty—see the NFL as an example of that. New seasons mean new coaches, new players, and in the English Premier League, even new teams. It would only be right to assume, with the added variable of the World Cup cutting into the summer breaks of many world-class players, that this season would be an especially difficult cipher early on.
For the weekly EPL Swarm convened by Unanimous AI, that hasn’t been the case. In fact, the swarm’s accuracy heading into Matchday Six of the 2018 season has been astounding. The swarm boomed in another strong effort last week, correctly forecasting the outcomes of 8 of the 10 matches in week five. (A potential 9-1 finish was undone when Southampton let in a tying goal at 90’+1; well done you Saints.) Figuring in those results, the swarm has now correctly predicted the outcome (wins, losses, and draws) of 35 of the 50 matches played this season. Here’s how they see this weekend.
Two teams expected to compete for the League title are off to strong starts this so far. Manchester City are in Wales this weekend to play Cardiff City, a likely mismatch that the swarm identified as their pick of the week. The team expected to give the defending champions a push this year is Liverpool. They play host to Southampton this weekend, and though the Saints are hardly a pushover team, the swarm still sees the hometown Reds taking this.
The replay shows that the swarm is extremely unified in pulling to the Liverpool side of the hex, and the magnets (each of which represent an individual swarm participant) form a strong consensus to take this to a two-goals-plus forecasted win. Later in the session, the deliberations over a pick of the week came down to Liverpool and City, with Manchester earning the swarm consensus. With that said, Liverpool looks very much like a strong, high confidence prediction as well.
Every week, researchers at Unanimous AI gather a Swarm of EPL fans to predict all of the weekend’s action. Want to join the Swarm, or just have the picks delivered to your inbox? Click the button below…
