“MUSIC IS ALL WE GOT…” — Chance the Rapper
If last week’s Super Bowl night was an epic football battle for the ages, this Sunday’s 59th annual Grammy Awards is shaping up to be an epic throwdown in the music arena. Both Beyonce and Adele have been deservedly showered with praise from fans and critics alike this past year, and both are nominated in multiple categories for this year’s awards. Who takes home the hardware?
Researchers at Unanimous A.I. asked a swarm of thirty casual music fans to use UNU to forecast the Grammy Awards results on Sunday. By putting the knowledge of multiple users together in a swarm environment on the UNU platform, the researchers are looking to see if Swarm Artificial Intelligence can continue a run of accurate awards show forecasts.
If the Swarm A.I. predictions are on target, Adele seems primed to have a very good night on Sunday. The Swarm A.I. heavily backed pretty much anything related to the British singer’s multi-platinum hit, “Hello.” In fact, the consensus and confidence of the group shown here, expressed as Brainpower, is almost shocking.
Obviously, Adele and “Hello” appear set to dominate both of the major song category awards for Sunday. The Record of the Year award is given out for the actual performance and recording and is shared by the artist and those involved in production. Song of the Year is given to songwriters, arrangers, and composers of a nominated song. In either case and by any measure, the Swarm A.I. thinks Adele wins both awards in a walk.
Don’t worry about Beyonce though. the Swarm A.I. thinks she’ll also take home one of the major Grammy Awards Sunday. Queen Bey’s critically hailed, best-selling album Lemonade looks like a confident pick for Album of the Year. If no single song from Lemonade made as strong an impression as “Hello”, as an artistic achievement over multiple songs the swarm went in reasonably strong for Beyonce to win this category.
One of the most hotly contested awards in the 59th Grammys appears to be Best New Artist. It’s a loaded field this year, but overall the Swarm A.I. gives a slight nod to Chance The Rapper over The Chainsmokers. The Swarm A.I. didn’t have nearly the confidence in this pick that it had in earlier predictions (notice the difference in brainpower between this pick and the others) so take that into account if you’re playing an office pool this year.
While these are considered by media and industry observers to be the “Big Four” categories, there are plenty of other interesting Grammys given out Sunday. The Swarm A.I. thinks that Adele is a slam dunk to win Best Pop Vocal Album for 25, and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Hello”. In the hotly contested Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, the swarm was so conflicted between Lukas Graham’s “7 Years” and Rihanna’s “Work” (which features a guest appearance by Drake) that despite the latter’s narrow nod from the swarm, it wouldn’t shock if either won on Sunday.
