The pennant races in the American League in 2018 look like they may end up as an amazing, expensive hand of high-stakes poker. In the East, the Yankees and Red Sox are fighting tooth and claw for first place, swapping in the standings every week. In the West, the Astros have loped to an easy lead, but Seattle is hanging with them, lurking just behind them in the standings. None of those four teams will see second place and a wildcard playoff spot as a good outcome, so these four clubs are likely to push all their chips into the pot by pursuing trades during the next month of the season. Those high stakes – and any resulting player movements – are elements the swarm has to watch closely as they make their predictions each week.
The Baseball Swarm’s two highest confidence predictions this week are Seattle to beat visiting Kansas City, and Houston to win on the road at Tampa Bay. Neither team can afford a stumble at this point, and both teams appear to have the advantage on the pitcher’s mound tonight. Interestingly, the swarm made Seattle their pick of the night.
The replay above is actually our “Pick of the Night” swarm deliberation. It showcases an interesting facet of the prediction process. Between the swarm predicting wins for Houston (and assigning an $80 wagering confidence) and Seattle (with a $100 confidence), in practical terms there were another half-dozen games to predict and assign confidence to. That ends up being, around 10-15 minutes of real time. At the end of a swarm session, the participants are then asked to compare their highest-confidence picks for a “Pick of the Night”. In no way does that replay suggest that either team is likely to lose; instead, this is a question that forces the swarm to choose just one from two favorite responses.
Thus, instead of comparing two results that may be separated by time and other factors, Unanimous can drill down a bit for some confirmation by putting two high-confidence games side-by-side and asking the group which is the one they feel the most conviction for. And so even if the swarm results indicate that you can’t go too far wrong with either pick tonight, if pushed their overall choice is the Mariners at home.
