Swarming MLB: AI Picks for August 3rd

The dream right now for contending MLB teams is to have every bit of their club’s potential come together and lead to a winning streak or run of successful games. This year that’s happened to both the Athletics and Pirates, two teams that have put themselves into contention, seemingly from out of nowhere. For even the most talented, high-priced rosters, getting hot at this point in the season takes roster depth, smart managing, and sometimes a little bit of luck. For Friday, the MLB swarm – fresh off a 9-6 record – made this set of picks for tonight’s contests.

One of the things a successful swarm must do is recognize how new data supersedes older information. The streaking Oakland Athletics are a case in point. On June 15, they were a team puttering along, two games under .500, but since then they’ve won 30 out of 40 games and are the hottest team in baseball. Tonight they’re in action at home against the Detroit Tigers, and the swarm loves their chances.

This replay neatly illustrates one of the key elements for how Unanimous AI assesses the confidence of a swarm’s prediction. The magnets in this case (each of which represents an individual swarm participant) are all clustered to the right side of the hex. That means that while there’s some dissent on whether tonight’s game will be a close one, there’s almost zero dissent on the end result, which is an Oakland victory. The swarm underscored that level of confidence by making this their pick of the night for tonight.
