With Major League Baseball in the final week of its season, only handful of teams are still playing games that have any postseason implications. For teams who have already punched their tickets for the playoffs, the goal is to manage a difficult balancing act. Those winning teams want to keep themselves healthy and find opportunities to rest players, while also working to keep a squad sharp for what’s to come. The weekly baseball swarm – looking to close strong on the season – has to be mindful of teams going to bullpens early and substituting on the field liberally in this final week.

Many of the teams towards the top of the chart (including pick of the night – Boston – a game now postponed by rain) are there because they’re deep teams who can probably win even when playing substitutes and prospects here and there. One game that stands out is the Washington Nationals hosting the Miami Marlins. The Nats have had a bitterly disappointing season in 2018, but tonight they sent Max Scherzer to the mound. Scherzer will be trying to burnish his credentials for the NL Cy Young Award, and as such is one of the few pitchers working tonight that the swarm can be reasonably confident will be allowed to pitch deep into a game if things go well for him.

The magnets move strongly towards a Washington win by two-plus runs immediately, and with a great deal of cohesion. This is one of those sometimes unique situations where one player playing for a personal goal (Scherzer) will benefit the entire team and improve its win prospects should he do well. The swarm seems to recognize that in this case, and it makes this game the most confident pick of the games remaining on tonight’s schedule.
