Swarming MLB: AI Picks for the Playoffs

The 2018 Major League Playoffs are upon us, already ushered in with the high drama of two extra regular season tie break games and a 13-inning Wild Card game marathon. Researchers at Unanimous AI convened a swarm of regular baseball fans earlier today to examine the 8 teams remaining in the series playoff brackets and predict which team was most likely to emerge as a winner.

The swarm had numerous factors to consider, from how the various teams played in the final weeks of the season, to potential injuries, to how a season’s wear-and-tear might fatigue pitcher’s arms. Did being able to rest and relax in September help the Red Sox and Indians to get set for postseason, or will they be rusty? Did the excellent play of the Colorado Rockies and Milwaukee Brewers in the final two weeks make them teams to fear in the playoffs, or did those clubs peak too soon? Those and many other variables and factors were part of the swarm’s deliberations today. Here’s how they predict things to go:

The biggest takeaway from the Swarm predictions for the MLB playoffs is that the group fully expects that Boston – despite being on cruise control for a few weeks – is the team to beat. In fact, the Swarm thinks the Sox will have their most difficult task negotiating what appears to be a loaded American League playoff field…but even there (and paired up with their arch-rivals from New York) they’re picked to win.

In the National League, the swarm predicts that the Dodgers should be able to handle the Braves without too much difficulty. It’s the other side of the bracket in the Senior Circuit where things get interesting. Milwaukee and Colorado were the two hottest teams in all of baseball down the stretch, and the swarm rates this division series as extremely close.

In the end, the swarm thinks the Red Sox will squeak through a difficult potential series matchup with Houston, while Los Angeles has an easier time with the winner of the Brewers and Rockies series. That would lead to a World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, with the swarm feeling reasonably confident about which team is more likely to win.
