Swarming the NHL: AI Picks for Week 12

The NHL is back in action tonight after taking a three-day break for the holidays. The league is entering a critical section of the season now, with less than two months to go before the trade deadline. Contending teams will be assessing their own squads to determine where they can shore things up for the post-season while teams at the bottom of the standings will be seeking out trading partners. Meanwhile, teams in the middle will have to decide whether they’re buyers or sellers.  The on-ice factors that inform those decisions are something the NHL Swarm will need to consider in the coming weeks.

Today for the second week in a row, the NHL Swarm picked Boston as its play of the night. Last week, the NHL Swarm (en route to a fantastic 7-3 week) chose Boston on the road against a crashing Buffalo Sabres team as its top-most prediction. This week they like the Bruins at home where they face the visiting Ottawa Senators.

The replay of that pick of the night shows that the swarm is pretty much unanimous on pulling not just to the Bruins’ side of the hex, but also forming rapid consensus on the 2+ goals prediction. Boston has been playing very well of late and is climbing steadily up the standings, while Ottawa has been moving in the opposite direction, and the swarm’s confidence with a $100 hypothetical bet reflects that as well.
