Swarming the NHL: AI Picks for Week 19

With the NHL regular season nearly two-thirds finished, it’s tempting for hockey scribes and analysts to start making bold predictions and projections for the final stretch run. Looking at the predictions made for tonight’s games by our weekly swarm of NHL hockey fans, it’s clear that they’re not lacking in confidence either.

But not without good reason, perhaps. The NHL Swarm has amassed a 49-23 record across the last seven weeks, which includes a stellar 9-2 showing in last week’s games. For tonight, the swarm clearly saw a number of games where they thought separating the two teams could be done confidently. Here’s what they came up with.

Back in October, a matchup featuring the Chicago Blackhawks and Vegas Golden Knights looked like it might be a mismatch. Here in February, our swarm still thinks a contest with those two teams fits that description, but maybe not in the way we’d have expected at the start of the season.  The clock has yet to strike midnight on the Golden Knights’ amazing season, while the ‘Hawks look like a team that’s aged in dog years over the past two months.

Vegas is simply the toughest place to play in the NHL this season, and the swarm thinks the Golden Knights will be more than up for the task of extending the Blackhawks’ six-game losing skid. The magnets in the replay above coalesce rapidly on a 2-goals-plus margin confidence for Vegas, and the puck moves rapidly to settle on that answer. Later on, the swarm picked Vegas in a tough decision over San Jose as the best bet of the night.
