Swarming the ACC: AI Picks for the Week of February 26th

With March fast approaching, the Atlantic Coast Conference appears to have a reasonable shot at placing 10 of its 15 teams in next month’s national tournament. While conference powerhouses such as Virginia, North Carolina and Duke punched their tickets to The Dance long ago, it’s teams like Notre Dame and NC State at the back end who make the ACC uniquely strong in this wide-open college hoops season.

This week, the NCAA Swarm begins its predictions with a stellar 11-3 record across the 14 games picked so far, including a 6-1 record last week. This week, the swarm picked a number of road teams at high confidence, betting that Virginia and Duke (with Marvin Bagley back from injury) can handle tough opponents in Louisville and Virginia Tech, respectively.

Although Louisville can be a difficult team to play at home, the NCAA Swarm thinks Virginia’s stifling defense will travel well and allow the Cavaliers to dispatch the Cardinals. Another interesting high confidence pick for the swarm is Notre Dame, who host a hapless Pitt team in South Bend this week.

Injury-riddled Notre Dame needs this game desperately. They expect to get All American Bonzie Colson back from a broken foot soon, perhaps in time for the ACC tournament next week and think they can make some noise in March Madness with him healthy – provided they’re waved in by the Selection Committee. The swarm thinks they’ll dominate Pitt this week, as the replay above shows. In fact, consensus forms more rapidly for the Irish in that prediction than the swarm even gave to their eventual pick of the week, Virginia.
