Betting Wimbledon: Swarm Earns 133% ROI

Betting Wimbledon is a tricky proposition. With dozens of skilled players competiting in a tournament that nearly a a month, Serena Williams’ wasn’t just her 22nd Grand Slam, it was also a victory for Swarm Intelligence. That’s because a group of 40 average sports fans, thinking together as a real-time swarm, once again picked the women’s champion out of a deep and talented field. This isn’t the exception for Swarm Intelligence, but is becoming the norm, as accurate picks were made by swarms this year at the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup and even the Kentucky Derby.

UNU allows groups of people to think together as a Swarm Intelligence, harnessing the power of natural swarms to make predictions and answer questions. This is what it looked like when researchers at Unanimous AI asked the Swarm of tennis fans to make predictions about Wimbledon a few weeks ago.

Serena Beats Everyone Wimbledon

Serena was, quite deservingly it turns out, the tournament favorite. That tends to happen when you’ve dominated the women’s game for as long as Serena has, but still, it’s no easy feat to pick the winner of Wimbledon at the beginning of the tournament. As a result, even heavily favored Serena Williams went off with Vegas odds of +150, meaning that according to the sportsbooks, it was more likely than not that someone besides Serena would win. As a result, a bet of $100 would have paid $150 in winnings, for a very healthy 150% ROI.

All of that goes to show how heavily favored Novak Djokovic was on the men’s side. Djokovic, who had won 30 straight Grand Slam matches and held all four Grand Slam titles (!!) coming into Wimbledon, was a -150 bet to open the tournament and that same $100 wager would only have won you $66.67 back. That means that, according to Vegas, if you’re betting Wimbledon it was more likely that Djokovic would win the tournament than everyone else in the field put together.

So, if the Swarm of tennis fans were simply going to pick the favorites to win Wimbledon, Novak was an even easier pick than Serena. And yet:

Novak Somebody Else Wimbledon

As you can see, the Swarm predicted that, for the first time in over a year, “someone else” besides Novak Djokovic would win a Grand Slam title. But, of course, the men’s field is large, and just taking the field isn’t much of a prediction, even if the Vegas experts clearly expected Novak to continue his dominance. So, who did the Swarm like to win Wimbledon if not for the Joker? Here’s what I wrote a few weeks ago:

So, tennis fans and degenerate gamblers, what should you do with your hard-earned money? If you listen to the Swarm, you’d put some cash on Serena to win. And, since the Swarm likes “someone else” to take home the men’s trophy, the aforementioned Andy Murray at +350 and potential spoiler Milos Raonic at +2200 could make you some money.

Let’s say you took the Swarm’s advice in betting Wimbledon – and wisely disregarded my own biased pick of Roger Federer – how would you have done this year? Keep in mind that, after weeks of tennis, Andy Murray ended up playing – and beating – Milos Raonic in the final. So, let’s assume a hypothetical $100 bet on Serena, as well as a $100 flyer on both Murray and Raonic to win, since the Swarm did not make a prediction between them. Serena Williams victory

  • $100 on Serena Williams to win at +150 = $250 return ( 150 winning plus 100 original stake )
  • $100 on Milos Raonic to win at +2200 = $0 return
  • $100 on Andy Murray to win at +350 = $450 return ( 350 winning plus 100 original stake )
  • $250 + $0 + $450 = $700

How does a 133.3% ROI sound to you? That’s what you get when you turn $300 and turn it into $700. Not a bad day on the court for the Swarm. Of course, this result just confirms what we’ve known for some time now – we’re betting off thinking together. Why not join the Swarm?

UPDATE: One UNU user took the Swarm’s picks to heart and placed a $1,000 bet on Serena to win it all! Amazing. The bet was placed on July 4th, so in the middle of the tournament, not right when the prediction was made, but this is not the first bet this user has placed: “I am still having great success with UNU bets. Check out my last bet on Serena for Wimbledon that I’ve attached!”
