As the month of June draws to a close, the Major League Baseball landscape has taken on a stable shape. Some surprising early successes (the star-crossed New York Mets, for instance) have fallen by the wayside. Others – such as the Braves and Brewers – have shown surprising depth and staying power, and look like clubs to reckon with all season long. An important thing for the participants in the weekly Baseball Swarm is to follow the evolving season, processing these emerging new data points and making predictions based on them. Here’s the swarm’s forecast of tonight’s MLB games.
Safe to say, the Houston Astros are one team that is surprising no one by being at the top their division right now, and they’re the swarm’s pick of the night tonight. However, since this blog seems to put the whammy on them when they’re featured, we turn our attention instead to another high confidence prediction by the swarm this week, the upstart Seattle Mariners. Although the M’s lost star second-baseman Robinson Cano to a drug suspension early this season, they’ve somehow figured out ways to win a slew of close games with late-inning heroics.
Tonight Seattle will send out hard-throwing ace James Paxton against a last-place Baltimore club. “Big Maple” has had an up-and-down season so far, but when he’s on (such as when he threw a no-hitter earlier this year) he’s as good as there is. The swarm thinks he’ll handle the Orioles tonight, as the replay above shows. In fact, in that replay you can see how the need for swarm members to constantly re-assess their positions on a prediction looks in real time. The initial response is split somewhat, with even a few magnets pulling for Baltimore. But then as the puck moves, more magnets come around to a decision that Seattle will win with some confidence. The $76 of virtual “money” the swarm was willing to wager here just clears the hurdle in confidence for this game to make the top tier of Best Bets.
