Swarming the NBA: AI Picks for Week 5

The first major blockbuster trade of the NBA season happened this past week, with the 76ers acquiring unhappy former Minnesota and Chicago star Jimmy Butler in a 5-player deal. That won’t be the last big transaction in the Association this season, and the way team fortunes shift based on such paradigm-altering deals is something the NBA swarm has to be aware of, week in and week out. The weekly swarm of regular NBA fans got together earlier today, and made this set of picks for tonight’s schedule:

Although the Toronto Raptors have established themselves as the class of the Eastern Conference in the season’s first month, with Jimmy Buckets on board the Philadelphia 76ers have to be liking their chances to stay near the top of the standings too. The swarm made Toronto the pick of the night at home against Detroit, but as the replay below shows, the group sees big things for the Sixers as well.

This is a really interesting study of the Swarm’s behavior. The magnets pull the puck almost in a straight line to the Philadelphia side of the hex, before finally resolving a difference of opinion with the group over a low or high confidence prediction. They end up at high confidence in an example of the various individual fans controlling those magnets responding to one another in the kind of closed feedback loop situation that the Swarm platform creates. The result ends up being a prediction with high confidence, one that’s got only mildly less conviction behind it than the pick of the night.
