Swarming the NHL: AI Picks for Week 9

Last week’s NHL Swarm was the opening salvo on an incredibly strong week of predictions made by our sports swarms. Although the hockey group missed one high confidence prediction last week when the struggling Florida Panthers managed to beat the Rangers at the Garden by a single goal, the overall record of 8-2 was the best winning percentage this swarm has posted to date this year.
For the games tonight, the swarm’s overall feeling ran hot and cold. Looking at the chart below, there are elements of both high and low confidence in almost every game the swarm considered. When the dust settles, here’s how we rank those predictions for tonight.

Of all the weighted criteria that goes into considering the ranking of our NHL games for confidence, none is more important than the goal margin that the swarm chooses. Once a swarm picks a 2+ goals margin, in almost every case that ends up as a high confidence prediction. In the case of the Penguins hosting New York tonight, however, the single piece of corroboration to go along with that goal margin was elusive. However, if you look at the replay below, you can see that most of the magnets end up pulling to the Pittsburgh side of the hex. That magnet momentum can be screened and quantified, and it just barely makes the swarm’s prediction of a Penguins victory a high-confidence one.
