It’s hard to put an exact date on when Major League Baseball teams start their closing kicks in the marathon season. If a team hasn’t gotten things into gear by the start of August, though, it probably isn’t going to happen for them this year. The season is 2/3rds complete; at this point teams are what they are.
The non-waiver trade deadline for MLB was yesterday afternoon. That’s usually a good demarcation line to assess which teams are going for it, and which are flying the white flag on 2017 and looking ahead. If there weren’t already apparent divisions between the haves and have-nots around baseball, typically that divide begins to stratify after the trade deadline and into the end of the MLB season. It’s an important factor for our MLB swarm to be aware of in the final third of this year’s contests.
One team that went all in on the trade deadline was the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers added two starting pitchers in Jaime Garcia and Sonny Gray, while bolstering their bullpen and offense by acquiring David Robertson and Todd Frazier from the White Sox. Over the weekend, the Yankees jumped the Red Sox to land in first place, and tonight they face an aging, fading Detroit Tigers team at home. The swarm is all in on the Bombers to win this one.
