Sportspicker AI Bracket in 92nd Percentile Heading Into Sweet 16

The first two rounds of March Madness are now in the books. Like most years, this tournament has been incredibly unpredictable. Some big favorites getting knocked off, some cinderella underdogs making deep runs. How is your bracket doing?

Well, if you used our picks, you should STILL be doing well. After the first round, Sportspicker A.I. was in the 92nd percentile of the ESPN Tournament Challenge. Then came the crazy second round.

At one point, our bracket reached the stratosphere. After 11-Syracuse upset 3-West Virginia Sunday, we were sitting in the 99th percentile! We came back to earth yesterday, somewhat, thanks to Iowa and Kansas getting upset. But after the dust settled, we found ourselves STILL in the 92nd percentile!

And we still have 3 of our Final Four picks still alive. Including our eventual champion Gonazaga, and runner up Baylor. So there is plenty of opportunity to maintain or even rise in status!

Here is how the bracket looks after Round 2.

This performance is a remarkable amplification of intelligence over the average bracket, which one would expect to find squarely in the 50th percentile. How do we do it?

Sportspicker AI leverages a small group of ~30 college basketball fans who use our online platform to make predictions together as a Swarm A.I. system. And yet, by turning those 30 people into a hybrid system, the AI technology is able to produce expert-level results through the first two rounds. This suggests that swarming a small group of people in real-time is a more efficient way to amplify human intelligence than polling even a much larger group.

For example, ESPN averaged the 15.7 million individual brackets in their Tourney Challenge into the so-called “People’s Bracket”, which is determined by taking the most popular pick for every game. This Wisdom of the Crowds-style forecast required the input of over 15,000,000 people, and yet it is way behind our 30-person AI-optimized bracket.
