At Unanimous AI, we don’t replace humans with automated systems. Instead, our Thinkscape AI technology connects large human groups together and empowers them to discuss, debate, and deliberate in real-time and quickly converge on solutions that significantly amplify their Collective Intelligence (see academic studies). This week a group of 34 randomly selected baseball fans used our Thinkscape.ai platform to discuss the MLB playoffs and predict (a) the most likely winner of each division, (b) the most likely World Series matchup, and (c) the team most likely to take the title in 2025.
The 34 participating MLB fans first deliberated each league to pick the teams they felt were most likely to make it to the World Series. In the National League, the group’s feelings were pretty clear:
Citing the team’s balance of pitching and hitting (a theme that was important across all deliberations), this group of fans strongly favored the Philadelphia Phillies to win the National League pennant. Participants mentioned the team’s surge through August and September, the rebuilt bullpen, and the power lineup punch of Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Kyle Schwarber. It was noted by multiple participants that they’d make the Phillies an even stronger pick if ace pitcher Zack Wheeler wasn’t out of action for the rest of the year. The top-seeded Milwaukee Brewers got some support as well, but many noted that the team seemed to cool off dramatically in the season’s final month. The Dodgers round out the top three, with many in the group counting out the defending champions due to their injury-ravaged pitching staff being a major issue in October.
Over in the American League, the discussion ran much closer:
In the American League, it was really a two-horse race between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, with Seattle coming out on top by a narrow margin. The discussion here again centered on the Mariners huge finish in September to lock up the AL West race. Participants also noted the strength of Seattle’s starting pitching, resurgent bullpen, and the offensive firepower provided by MVP candidate Cal Raleigh. The Blue Jays got nearly the same degree of support, with their overall team balance being frequently cited – especially the team’s dangerous and deep lineup. A few simply cited the Seattle Mariners jinx – that Seattle hasn’t made it to the World Series in their nearly 50-year existence as a club.
Using the data captured by Thinkscape across these discussions, Unanimous AI was able to assign overall probabilities to win the World Series across all 12 teams competing in the playoffs:
As the chart shows, the participating baseball fans are most confident in the red-hot Phillies to win it all, followed by the Mariners, Brewers, and Blue Jays. In addition, the group saw San Diego, Chicago, and the Yankees as the three Wildcard contenders with the best shot at winning the Fall Classic.
