Finally, the NFL is here! Week 1 of the long awaited season is in the books, starting with Denver’s impressive victory on Thursday, and ending with the 49ers thrashing of the Rams on Monday night. UNU is of course, more than a casual observer. Researchers at Unanimous A.I. leveraged UNU’s power as a Swarm Intelligence platform to make predictions for the first week of the NFL season.
In case you haven’t been paying attention, UNU has built up quite a track record for predicting sports. Responding to challenges for journalists, UNU has made surprisingly accurate forecasts for the College Football Bowl Games, the Stanley Cup playoffs, Wimbledon and the Kentucky Derby. Most recently, UNU has turned its attention to perhaps the most fickle of all sports–Major League Baseball–and is absolutely crushing it.
So how about the NFL? How did UNU do in picking games in Week 1? The short answer – not too shabby. Unanimous researchers assembled a group of 30 NFL enthusiasts and had them form a Swarm Intelligence to predict the games. For each match-up, they asked the swarm to recommend not only what team to pick, but whether to pick Straight Up or Against the Spread.
Here’s an example that shows the swarm making one of the picks.
At the time this prediction was made, the Patriots were a 6.5 point underdog, on the road, against a tough Arizona Cardinals squad. No Tom Brady. No Gronk. It didn’t look very promising for the Pats. Not so fast, said UNU. The Swarm recommended betting on New England to cover the spread, evidently thinking the 6.5 points was too much to give New England. So what actually happened? Unheralded backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo lead the Patriots to a 23-21 win. Well played, UNU, well played.
All in all, the Swarm went 7-4 (64% accurate) in games it chose to wager on with a tiny positive ROI. No, it’s not a home-run, but it’s a respectable result considering all the uncertainty of Week 1. Also note that the average record of Experts at CBS Sports was 8-8 (50% accurate). So once again, the fans beat the experts by using UNU.
All in all a pretty good start to the season for UNU. So the question is, will the Swarm learn from Week 1 and do even better in Week 2? Your call, but we wouldn’t bet against UNU….
