The MLB trade deadline has come and gone. Now, after a wild couple days, the dust has settled and the MLB world turns its attention to the final two months of the season. Who will win the division and wild card races? Who will take home the AL and NL pennants? And who will win the World Series?
Several of the division races are a foregone conclusion, with the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers holding commanding leads. But the other three have two or three teams battling it out down the stretch. And where it really gets interesting is the Wild Card races. The National League has 5 teams battling out for the 3 slots, while the American League has 7 teams with a realistic chance to make the Playoffs via the Wild Card.
To answer these questions, we looked to Sportspicker AI for its predictions for the MLB postseason. Sportspicker generates all its forecasts using Swarm technology from Unanimous AI to make hyper-accurate assessments, leading to great picks. Sportspicker has analyzed hundreds of games this season and distributed picks to subscribers.
Why should we care about these predictions? Well, it turns out Sportspicker AI is pretty smart. Most recently, it predicted that the Golden State Warriors would win the NBA Finals in 6 games. And that is exactly what happened.
So what does Sportspicker AI say about the MLB Postseason?
First the AI system analyzed the Division and Wild Card races. The output shows the probability of each team making the playoffs and/or winning its division. Some of the answers are obvious. You probably don’t need an AI to tell you that the Yankees are going to win the AL East. But several others are not so straightforward. The Wild Card races are particularly tight.
Sportspicker AI actually doesn’t see a lot of uncertainty in the National League. The top 6 teams are very likely to make the playoffs. The only question is which ones will be division winners and which ones will be wild cards. That’s bad news for the Phillies and Giants who would appear to be on the outside looking in.
Unlike the National League, the American League has a lot of open questions. There are ten teams in the race, and 8 of them appear to have a decent probability to make the 6 spots. The AI sytem lists each of them with its probability to make it. One interesting finding is that the AI doesn’t have much faith in the Baltimore Orioles. At this writing, the O’s are only 1/2 game out of a wild card spot. But the AI system believes they are only 7% likely to make the playoffs.
Having identified the most likely 3 Division Winners and 3 Wild Cards in each league, the AI system ranked those 6 teams for its likelihood to make it through the gauntlet of the Playoffs and make it to the World Series. This is where it gets interesting. The Yankees and Dodgers are considered the most likely teams to represent the AL and NL in the fall classic, but they are certainly not a sure thing.
The Mets and Braves in the NL and the Astros in the AL all have a significant probability of getting there. And the AI believes that the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres are both attractive dark horses. At +1100 for the Padres and +3500 for the Blue Jays (at time of writing), these might be interesting wagers.
That being said, if it’s the Yankees and Dodgers who will win? Here’s what the AI system says. We’ll see if it’s right!
So what’s the take away? Well, the numbers don’t lie. It’s pretty clear that using an AI for optimized sports intelligence is pretty smart. If you want to check out Sportspicker AI for yourself, you can check out the website HERE.
