Swarm AI Reacts to Trump’s Victory

President Trump. What the experts deemed a distant possibility two weeks ago is now a reality. Now, with Hillary Clinton enjoying her retirement and pollsters trying to figure out what went wrong with their models, Donald Trump is preparing to take on his new job as the most powerful person in the free world.

If you’ve spent any time in UNU Current Events over the past year, Trump’s victory may not come as a complete surprise. Our final pre-election Swarm predicted that Clinton would win the popular vote, which she did, but the oft-mentioned “enthusiasm gap” was clearly evident in the daily discussion in UNU. Love him or hate him, people seem to be fascinated by the real-estate mogul, and that excitement carried him to victory on Tuesday. Still, because Clinton’s victory seemed inevitable for so long, watching it unfold in real-time with the UNU Community was an experience I may never forget.

Shortly after Clinton’s concession, we fielded an Artificial Swarm Intelligence composed of 60 randomly selected voting age Americans of mixed age, gender, party affiliation, and geographic location. We wanted to know how the nation truly felt about the election and the impending Trump Presidency. The video below shows the swarm responding to our questions in real time, providing instant insights into the hopes and fears of the American electorate just minutes into the Trump era.

Though the Democratic nominee was dogged by questions about her use of a private email server, a Clinton victory was widely believed to be inevitable throughout the lengthy campaign cycle. Nate Silver, who rose to prominence when he correctly predicted all 50 states correctly in the 2012 election, gave Clinton a 70% chance of winning and can only boast now of being “less wrong” than many other outlets. ( For the record, Unanimous AI predicted Clinton would win the popular vote by 3.7%, which was slightly higher than the 2% she seems to have garnered. ) All this raises the question of why so few so-called experts saw Trump’s victory coming?
Trump Victory Media Bias

Looking a little more closely into this result, you can see that while “Media Bias” was clearly the most well-supported response, nearly every one of the choices was considered. But, as the question unfolded, the group built consensus around the choice that was most agreeable to the highest number of people.
